Development

Cuphead is the first game an indie game development studio consisting of Jared Moldenhauer and brothers Chad, by Studio MDHR. Jake Clark contributed added animation work. Its development started in 2010, and they worked on the game out of their respective houses in Toronto and Saskatchewan. The game was inspired by 1930s animations such as that of Fleischer Studios, Disney, and cartoonists Ub Iwerks, Grim Natwick, and Willard Bowsky, especially their most “subversive and surrealist” elements. Chad Moldenhauer called Fleischer Studios “the magnetic north of his artwork fashion”. Kill Screen described Max Fleischer’s studio (run with his two brothers) as having “transportive, transformative, and massively fucked up” short films, such as “Swing You Sinners!”

The Moldenhauers saw ’30s cartoons in their own youth, which Chad Moldenhauer describes as happenstance, based on gifts and VHS compilations. In gameplay, the two shared interest and aesthetic taste among other siblings in their Regina, Saskatchewan childhood house. They tried a game in 2000 in the fashion of Cuphead download full game, but lacked the tools to continue. The brothers chose to try following the success of indie video game Super Meat Boy in 2010. Where a guy with a teacup for a head morphs into a tank, the character that became Cuphead descended from a 1936 Japanese propaganda animated film.
